Trinstar asked:
I have many physical symptoms. They worsen when I go to places like the grocery store. My vision gets weird and I feel like I can’t focus. I have a past history of alcohol problems. I have been sober for about 2 yrs. I don’t know what to do anymore though because I haven’t ever had a real job, I dropped out of college, and I have tried anti-depressants and they didn’t work for me even at high doses. I have also gone to therapy and read an anxiety work book. I feel very hopeless. Can anyone recommend something I could try that might help it. I used to just try and hide my anxiety. It is to the point where if I am out with a friend they notice and ask if I am ok.
I am not a violent person. I am a wife and mother of two children. What happened at Va Tech was very sad. I am and never will be a person like that. That comment was very rude and uncalled for.

How do I get over my phobia of Lightning?

I’ve been scared of Lightning since I was a young child. I can’t stand it. The flashes give me a sudden fright and the sound that follows is just scary. I always fear lightning will strike through my house and hit me when there is a storm. Is there anyway I can get over this ridiculous fear? I can barely stand being near a closed window during a storm, let alone on a porch watching one. I only know 2 people that are scared of storms and that is my mother and my friend, but I’m horribly afraid of it.

I had a panic attack on the third lane a few years ago, and now I cannot go on the freeway without feeling like I am going to pass out. I feel like such a psycho taking the side streets when it is more convenient to take the freeway. Has anyone had a similar experience and how do I get over this?

We live in New York City, and they seem to be everywhere after dark. Every time she sees one, which is almost daily, she panics. I try to reassure her that they aren’t in her apartment, but I can’t imagine how much she would panic if one did turn up – they’re all around the alleys outside, and it wouldn’t really surprise me. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions? A good book that might help? Right now I just try to calm her down and tell her that she’s bigger than her, and they can’t hurt her, but I don’t know how much it helps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Follow-up: I’m not upset at her for acting irrationally, I just want to help her beat this – she is just beginning a promising career in an area where she’ll have to enter some really low-income areas to assess living conditions and conduct interviews, so I want her to overcome this.
Further update: They aren’t in either of our apartments. Have you ever been to NYC? They’re all over the streets at night, in even the best neighborhoods. I’m not forcing anything on her at all – she’s beginning a career as an Assistant District Attorney, which will require her to interview witnesses in housing projects – she wants to get past it enough that she’s able to work without the fear taking control.
