coochie1 asked:

I am terrified of cockroaches and constantly paranoid that i’ll see one. In fact, my fear is so extreme it’s one of the reasons my ex bf couldn’t get along with me. He couldn’t understand why i was so picky about the places where I ate. I’ve seen cockroaches on walls at restauarants before, One time even saw one crawl into the kitchen and they couldn’t find it! I was wth a cousin on that occasion and she still ate her meal. I couldn’t even stand being in the place any longer.

My family and I we’ve also had bad experience with waking up with them on us, falling or flying in our hair when we’re outside or in a car. One time one was on the outside of a window of my car and is couldn’t even continue driving with it in front of me like that. I sleep with a pillow always covering my face so nothing will crawl on it.

I am absoluetly terrified and i fog my house every month even tho i’ve never seen a bug. Anybody feel the same? experiences? what do you guys think?

Most people are not aware that they are having a phobia. However, it is very important to know whether you are having it. Try to determine the following:

a) Are you afraid to fly?

b) Are you unable to stand needles?

c) Do you tend to cancel your appointments with the doctor?

If the answers to the above mentioned questions is in a ‘yes’ may have a specific phobia.

What is it? The term may sound bizarre to you but it is not. This is an anxiety disorder. It is a type of fear. However, it is quite different from the usual fear that we tend to face on a daily basis or we normally have. These are intense fears.

An individual having specific phobia can suffer from intense or excessive fear of a certain object or situation. The object or the situation may not be very difficult or dangerous. The person still reacts to it.

It starts during childhood or during the adolescence stage of a person. These are very common among men.

In order to know whether a fear you have is an actual phobia, you must understand different diagnostic criteria.

1) Here are some diagnostic criteria:

a) The fear is intense and may start even with the imagination of the object or situation that is feared.

b) The anxiety starts as soon as the person sees the feared object or situation. The anxiety may also take shape of an attack.

c) Adults with this disorder are aware that their fear to a specific object or situation is intense.

d) The person usually tries to avoid the situation an object that is feared.

e) The fear and avoiding certain objects or situation tends to interfere with daily activities. The person tends to spend most of his time worrying about the phobia.

2) Here are some different types of the condition:

a) Animal type

The person worries about a particular animal and can not stand the right or imagination of this animal.

b) Natural environment type

Here, the individual tends to worry about a specific environmental object such as water, heights or storms.

c) Blood, injection or injury type

As the name suggest, the person fears blood and needles.

d) Situational type

The patient feels anxiety when facing or thinking about a situation such as airplanes, enclosed places, elevators etc.

3) Symptoms

A person with this phobia shows the following symptoms

a) Intense feeling of terror when face to face with feared object.

b) A panic attack such as shortness of breath, sweating, numbness, and dizziness.

c) The person tends to avoid the feared object to such an extent that it starts to interfere the daily activities.

d) The person faces obsessive worry related to an upcoming in counter with the feared object or situation.

Visit a health care practitioner as soon as you observe any of the above mentioned symptoms.

4 Tips To Overcome Fear Of Driving Phobia

Driving phobia is one of the most common yet debilitating phobias there is. People who suffer from it see their social life, career, general well being, and happiness take a massive downturn due to this affliction. Despite the awful effects of this phenomenon, many people neglect to do anything about it, resigning themselves to commuting by public transportation, avoiding activities which require driving, staying indoors more often than they would’ve like to, and more.

That is a real shame, because fear of driving phobia can be treated and indeed, it can be cured completely. Like most phobias, it’s a mental state which doesn’t have to be permanent. In fact, it’s entirely up to the person who suffers from it to decide that he or she will get over their fear of driving a car. If you too suffer from this phobia, know that the answer lies within you. All you have to do is make a commitment to yourself.

Here are 4 tips on how to overcome fear of driving

1. Take small steps and you will eventually get to your destination — A lot of people who have a fear of driving simply give up using their car altogether. This is the way to perpetuate your condition, not to heal yourself. If you feel that you’re unable to drive, simply use the car for short periods. Either drive around the block, or to the grocery store, or take frequent pit stops to make sure your fear doesn’t build up. By doing so, you’re conditioning your mind to gradually overcome your fears.

2. Listen to soothing music while you’re driving — Music has great effect on our mood. Find some music that you can relax to and play it while you’re driving. It will lower your overall stress levels and your will enjoy your ride more.

3. Get a driving buddy — To do things together is usually less scary than to do them by yourself. Many people have a fear of driving alone. Ask a friend or family member to accompany you while you drive. That way you’ll build up your confidence and experience less fear.

4. Take deep breaths — If you’re ever driving and start to experience one of the many symptoms of your phobia (sweating, stomach aches, nausea), take a few deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly. Deep breaths steady the heart beat and help you to relax.

Always remember that you can overcome your driving phobia. Take the first step and make a firm decision to get over your fears and start on a new road.

How to Stop Fears, Phobias and Anxieties

If you have phobias and anxieties, you may require support to help stop fears from overtaking your life. You can use a number of different approaches to guide you to success. Any anti-fear approach can be augmented with self-hypnosis.

Phobia

A phobia is a fear that has gotten out of control. Your fright is a natural, healthy response to threatening circumstances. Your body is very effective in keeping you out of danger when it uses this emotion. The physical effects are enough to encourage you to avoid dangerous situations.

When the natural protective emotion gets out of control, it develops into a phobia. You know you have this condition if you are constantly worried about running into your source of distress. Your feelings are irrational and overwhelming.

Phobias interfere with your ability to function normally on a regular basis. You may avoid normal situations and you obsess over the fearful experiences. The very notion of facing the source of your phobia can cause you to feel great anxiety.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a response that you feel when you are overwhelmed with emotion and nervousness. Anxiousness and phobic state of mind can lead to feelings of panic that seem to come out of nowhere. The anxiety and fearful responses are all encompassing, making it seemingly impossible to control.

Treatment approaches

You can use a few different psychological interventions to help stop fears before they get out of control. Even when the fearfulness develops into a phobia, there are steps you can take to work through them. Each approach can be complemented with self-hypnosis to maximize their effectiveness.

Desensitization is a great approach for dealing with phobic and frightful responses to situations, animals and objects. This systematic approach begins with you simply picturing your source of anxiety in your mind. Gradually, you are introduced to the object of fear until you can face it without feeling anxiety.

Cognitive therapy helps you retrain the way that you think about your source of distress. This approach uses your conceptual thoughts to work through your anxiety and phobic responses. Cognitive therapy is a process that takes considerable time but it does yield excellent results.

Help Stop Fears Using Self-Hypnosis

Each approach can be augmented with self-hypnosis. This complementary approach is ideal because it supports you as you try to use your conscious mind to guide you to feelings of calm and relaxation, no matter what you face. Hypnosis creates a path to the subconscious mind.

Your subconscious is the hub of automatic responses like fearful reactions to certain situations or objects. Self-hypnosis works directly with the inner workings of your mind, easing you through your recovery process. This is the perfect complement to desensitization and cognitive therapy.

Both desensitization and cognitive therapy rely on your conscious mind to do the work. This can be counterproductive if you subconscious mind is convinced that there is reason to be fearful. Self-hypnosis can help stop fears as an augmentative approach or independently.
