People have an instinctive fear of insects. There’s an evolutionary reason for this. Our bodies recoil at the sensation of tiny legs swarming over them, or tiny probosci feeling our skin. If they didn’t we’d have long died out. The human race would have succumbed to innumerable insect-borne illnesses. One of the evolutionary functions of bugs is to help spread small organisms. Bugs are the number one carriers of infection in the world.

Aversion Turns To Phobia

However, for many people, trouble begins when their natural aversion to creepy crawlers turns into a full-blown phobia of insects. A phobia is an intense, pervasive, irrational reaction of panic in response to a particular trigger or stimulus (in this case, bugs). People who suffer from this kind of reaction to little critters that fly and crawl find themselves leading lives of terror. For these unfortunate individuals, picnics pr relaxing walks through the woods are often ruined by the sight of harmless bumblebees. For these people, there aren’t any quiet days of reading at home–not if they see a spider making a web in some out-of-the-way corner.

Fear Ruins Lives

In extreme cases, people who suffer from insect phobia refuse to go outside altogether, for fear of encountering the loathed creatures. Others find themselves unable to go to sleep, as insects will begin to haunt their nightmares. Some people are so consumed by their fears that they imagine that insects are crawling all over their bodies the moment they lie down in their beds. This is a phenomenon known as formication (from the Latin root for the word “ant”). There have been reports of emergency room patients who have shredded their own skin to ribbons, trying to scratch away at imaginary bugs.

You must seek help. If you have an irrational terror of bugs, don’t let it progress to this point. Fortunately, there are a number of techniques out there that can help you reduce (or even altogether cure) your phobia.

Cure Your Fear Of Insects With NLP And Hypnotherapy

Among the most powerful techniques to overcome your phobia are hypnotherapy and NLP (which stands for “neuro-linguistic programming”). These powerful, irrational fears often work like a simple computer program, embedded deep within your mind. Ordinary, conscious thought processes (such as when you’re, say, trying to figure out what you think of a novel you just read) work in a complicated way. Each conscious thought process is a different and unique progression of thoughts and neurological impulses. By contrast, irrational phobic reactions are usually comprised of just one pattern of thought, repeated each time you see whatever triggers the phobic reaction.

What You Will Learn

NLP can teach you to recognize the unconscious pattern of thought that leads to fear. The NLP therapist doesn’t care why you think this way. He or she only cares about teaching you to recognize these thoughts. Having learned to do this, you can learn to use a combination of NLP and hypnotherapy techniques to replace these unproductive, irrational fearful thoughts with more rational ones. In this way, these powerful techniques can help you conquer your fear of insects and begin to lead a normal life.

Some people enjoy birding as a hobby and other people suffer from a debilitating fear of birds. Seagulls at the beach instill panic and anxiety in people with a phobia of birds. Even pigeons on the city streets or crows in the country sky can illicit feelings of anxiety. In fact, any type of bird can be terrifying. However, there is treatment available that can make people with this phobia stop being afraid and instead turn them into people who enjoy spending their time bird watching.

A Fear of Birds is a Serious Matter

While this might not be one of the most common types of phobias, it is a serious one that affects many people. Part of the reason that this phobia is so serious is because birds are everywhere and they are unavoidable. People who are afraid of spiders and snakes may be able to avoid places where these animals usually gather. However, a bird is not so easily controlled and can fly overhead at any time.

Phobias are, essentially, distortions of rational thoughts. Nobody would like to be attacked by a bird. However, most of us can recognize the small probability that we will ever be attacked by a bird and can go on living normal lives. Those with a phobia cannot do that.

What are People Afraid Of?

As with most phobias, people are often anxious for irrational reasons. People may be concerned that a bird is going to attack them. Of course, birds are typically not aggressive and the vast majority of people see them in the sky every day of their lives and have never been threatened by them.

How People Cope With This Phobia

Many people find their panic to be debilitating. They are unable to leave their homes because of the possibility that they will see a winged animal overhead that will cause them to suffer a panic attack or some other embarrassing behavior.

It Is Important To Get Help

People do not need to live with this kind of intense anxiety. They need to get help that will allow them to leave their homes and go about the daily business of working and living in society.

NLP and Hypnotherapy Can Help

This type of phobia is a learned condition. People are not innately afraid of birds. Usually, their concern about these kinds of animals comes from a bad experience with one bird that they project on every member of the species or a scary story about winged animals that made them afraid.

NLP and hypnotherapy can quickly and effectively change the way the mind thinks about birds. People will no longer be afraid but, rather, will recognize that the animals flying overhead are no threat to them. The conditioned response of panic will be gone and will be replaced with normal feelings.

NLP and hypnotherapy can be so effective that people who used to have a profound fear of birds may turn into avid bird watchers who respect and enjoy all types of flying animals.

Overcoming Phobias

Do you have a fear of flying? No. How do you feel about public speaking? Phobias can range from fear of things, like spiders, germs or enclosed spaces to fear of actions such as public speaking or driving across a bridge. Phobias are learned responses. Most people who have a phobia realize their fear doesn’t necessarily make sense, but they can’t seem to get around it.

When you have a fear of something, you think about that thing and feel anxiety. To overcome a phobia, you want to break the association between that thought and that feeling, and replace the negative link with a positive one.

Here’s an example. Let’s say the thought of standing in front of a group of people to make a presentation makes you feel anxious. You think about the situation and all kinds of negative thoughts enter your head like, “I’ll forget what I’m supposed to say,” “I’ll sound dumb,” or “People won’t be interested in my presentation.” Then you keep repeating those negatives. No wonder you don’t look forward to the talk.

Instead, sit down and relax. Think of a time when you felt very confident-a particular experience. It could be anything, a meal you cooked for dinner, choosing a sweater that you’d look great wearing. Close your eyes and imagine that experience. See where you were, recall if there were sounds around you, if there was anything you were saying to yourself, how you felt. Project yourself back to that experience and feel that confidence.

Hold on to the good feeling and build on it doing the same exercise with other feelings you’d need to make that presentation a positive experience. Perhaps a time when you achieved something great, or a time when you were very relaxed. When you are feeling really good and optimistic, make a little mental movie of the situation in which you will make the presentation. Feel the good feelings as you watch the movie. See yourself doing a wonderful job and feeling very positive during the experience. Practice this before your presentation and be amazed.
