This book brings the subject of urination anxiety out of the closet

Review Date: February 28, 2009
Reviewer: S. Stanewick,
I had no idea that I was among some 17 million people who suffer from psychogenic urinary retention, fancy name for shy bladder. Thank goodness the internet opened the topic. I am especially thankful to Carol Olmert who has covered every aspect of paruresis having suffered from it herself. The knowledge she provides is incredibly helpful. She lists many wonderful resources most especially the International Paruresis Association . She deserves a five star rating for a comprehensive book that inspires anyone who suffers from shy bladder. Help is there for the reading. It's especially informative for those who are friends, family and physicians.
I thought I was the only one!

If only a book like this had been written years ago! I once thought I was the only woman with shy-bladder syndrome (paruresis). Carol Olmert is my hero. She describes in detail what it is like to suffer from this problem and the steps necessary to recover. She has made great strides in her own recovery and now is helping other women With this dibilitating condition to get their lives back (or perhaps get a life for the first time!) Paruresis is handled as a social anxiety or phobia and Ms. Olmert goes into great detail on everything from graduated exposure to self-catheterization. I highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from paruresis or has a loved one with it.

This is an exceptionally well-written, extremely informative review of paruresis (shy bladder), which includes a wealth of information and resources for recovery. I highly recommend it for those with this condition as well as for professionals and anyone who lives with or has an interest in learning about this disorder.
Great book about Shy Bladder Syndrome for BOTH Men and Women

Anyone who has problems using public restrooms or producing a urine sample for drug testing should read this book. Carol does a great job at explaining what paruresis is, who suffers from it, and what you can do to treat it. Although the book is written from a female's perspective, it will benefit both women and men who suffer from paruresis. The book is easy to read, especially from a patient's point-of-view. There are many personal stories in it from both the author as well as other women who told their stories about living with a "bashful bladder". The book also includes a comprehensive list of references about anything dealing with paruresis, bathroom designs, treatment methods for parureis, and where to get help.

I highly recommend this book for ANYONE who wants to learn more about paruresis.

Note: check out the author's website for detailed information about the book and how to download a PDF version for only $[...]. (http://www.bathroomsmakemenervous.com/index2.html)
