when u say ,u have tried out all the possible resorts to overcome ur phobia then i feel its better that u consult a psychiatrist.it could be bcoz of ur past experiences which u dont remember.when u say that u feel safe with a licenced driver then i guess ur unconscious mind holds some incidences which inturn enables u to act abnormally and feel afraid in driving alone on highways..

A doctor who deals with phobias (a specialist in psychology or psychiatry I would think) would be able to explain it.

I think that phobias can sometimes arise from low blood sugar and its causes, but don’t know of any sources to refer you to on that particular subject.

go into therapy – either by finding out why you are phobic to driving alone on highways, or go straight into it with aversion therapy. You might know what aversion therapy is — meaning to be exposed to the thing you are phobic to. Let’s say you try driving on a highway and getting off at the soonest exit in your first try, do that a few times, then try going further once you’ve established confidence.

Driving on highways is very intimidating. When I was young and first moved to the “big city” from a small town, I was freaked out every time I had to drive on a highway. If you are in a big city and have the kind of highways I’ve driven on, they can be confusing and complicated with all the lane changes that have to be made to follow what you think is a straight path etc.

Comfort behind the wheel of a car comes with practice, I’ve driven on so many highways, so many times now, it doesn’t worry me anymore.

For now, try to drive highways when you have someone with you, as you get more comfortable driving you will will get over your fear of driving alone on highways…if you don’t then maybe there is something deeper to it.

pick up a hitch hiker then you wont be alone! always go for the ones that look like the red necks in “Deliverance”!!

I think you need to see a therapist. I don’t think it’s the driving itself, but the isolation that scares you. See a professional who can help you.
